Roundtable 3: Campus Carry Initiative and How We Talk With Students about Issues Related To Gun Violence

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule and see who's attending!

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify resources for framing classroom discussions of gun violence.
  2. Identify program activities that could be held in response to Campus Carry proposals.

A bill passed by the Texas Legislature in 2015 will permit concealed handguns on Texas public university campuses effective Aug. 1, 2016. The bill, Campus Carry, allowed each institution to draft its own policies regarding where concealed handguns would be allowed within certain parameters. The topic became a major point of discussion for the UTMB Galveston Public Health Program and faculty and students took advantage of various venues to provide input. Texas is just one of several states that have adopted or are considering Campus Carry legislation.
